From August 2 to 13, the 6th Gomoka World Championship was held in Suzdal.
The competition was held in two stages: a qualifying tournament took place on August 2-5, and the championship itself took place on August 6-13. The championship became the fourth in a row since the resumption of the tournament in 2009 (the first two were held in 1989 and 1991). This championship has broken an anti-record in the number of participants: in the qualifying tournament, only 13 people played at 11 places in the main championship. The open In-tournament for the first time in 6 years did not take place at all. For various reasons, a number of European players took part: no one came from Poland or the Czech Republic. Oleg Bulatovsky from Ukraine was also unable to take part, according to some reports, fearing unpleasant consequences for himself because of his departure to Russia. It is sad to see how the political situation affects sporting events, since sport must be out of politics. Of the Russian players, Denis Osipov and Ilya Muratov (having a ticket to the AT World Championship as a champion of Russia) from Moscow, as well as Tyumen players could not take part because of the geographical distance of the venue. Hungary was represented at the tournament by Gergo Toth and Rudolf Dupsky, the current world champion Attila Demian did not come.
Despite the small number of both tournaments were held in an interesting competition, their outcome remained unknown until the last round.
Results of the qualifying tournament
The qualification was held on the Swiss system in 7 rounds with a temporary control of 80 minutes + 30 seconds. At the very beginning of the tournament, it became known that Ilya Muratov would not be able to participate, thus the first 11 places (and not 10) took place in the main world championship. Rudolf Dupsky (scored 6.5 out of 7) and Denis Kachaev (scored 5.5 out of 7, behind Dupsky) showed the best form in qualifying. Until the very last round it was unclear who would take first place; if Dupsky (who played with Valery Kondratiev) lost, he would be content with only second place.
Third round game Dupskiy-Kachaev, which lasted almost three hours
In the World Championships, the eleven lucky ones from the qualifying tournament were joined by a fresh one, just arrived in Suzdal, Gergo He, who had a national ticket. The main tournament was very different from qualifying. The tournament was held in a circular system in 11 rounds. Increased and control: 135 minutes + 30 seconds; batches lasted longer, tension, fatigue and intensity of struggle, respectively, only grew.
Party last round of Tot-Dupsky
The main intrigue was the party of the last round of Tot-Dupsky, where the fate of the championship actually turned out. Rudolf Dupsky was able to competently take advantage of the original initiative and quickly realized the advantage of White, becoming the new world champion in gomok. The only party the future champion lost only to Anatoly Smirnov in the sixth round (by the way, the frequenter of the site renju.in). Gergo Toth went without defeat until the last round, and Russian Mikhail Kozhin, who took third place, lost only to both Hungarians. All tournament games are packed at gomokuworld.
